Malta Creates First Advanced Drone Training Programme

Drone training with the University of Malta

Malta is set to take a bold step forward in drone innovation with the launch of its first ever advanced UAV micro-credential, developed in collaboration with the University of Malta and our European branch, EEI Europe. This micro-credential is designed specifically for commercial drone pilots and operators who have already completed basic UAV training and are ready to expand and develop their skills to a more advanced level.

As the drone industry continues to develop, with drones revolutionising industries, from logistics and agriculture to infrastructure inspection and emergency response, the demand for highly skilled pilots and operators who understand the complexities of advanced drone technology is ever increasing. This new micro-credential answers that call, offering a comprehensive, hands-on learning experience unlike any other currently available in Malta.

What’s Included in the Study Unit?

This micro-credential goes beyond the basics, diving deep into advanced civilian UAV applications, including cargo delivery, Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations, and more. Students will explore the latest in sensor technologies, photogrammetry, and drone simulation and programming.

Other key topics will include:

  • Concept of Operations (CONOPS) development and safety analysis
  • Flight operations and mission planning
  • UAV security protocols
  • Drone design, assembly, and maintenance

The course is divided into theoretical modules followed by practical flight training, ensuring that students not only understand advanced concepts but can also apply them in real-world scenarios.

What Will You Learn?

By the end of the course, students will be equipped with advanced technical knowledge, including the ability to:

  • Describe drone applications and use cases
  • Explain how advanced drone sensors and systems operate
  • Understand the principles behind drone photogrammetry
  • Identify and mitigate safety and security risks
  • Grasp the fundamentals of drone design, assembly and maintenance

Students will also develop hands-on practical skills including the ability to:

  • Select the best drone and sensor payload for different missions
  • Develop a comprehensive CONOPS for advanced drone applications
  • Conduct thorough risk assessments
  • Use advanced mission planning and mapping software

A First for Malta – And a Step Into the Future

This is Malta’s first micro-credential of it’s kind, marking a significant milestone in the island’s commitment to innovation and education in the drone industry. Delivered in partnership with the University of Malta, the course combines academia with real-world applicability, opening new career and business opportunities for participants both nationally and internationally.
