GVC to RPC-L1 BRIDGING COURSE

Flight instruction: 2 Hours  Categories: Rotorcraft or Aeroplane

OVERVIEW

This course is designed for remote pilots who already hold a valid General Visual Line of Sight Certificate (GVC) and wish to convert to the new Remote Pilot Certificate Level 1 (RPC-L1) under the UK CAA’s updated competency framework.

RPC-L1 is the baseline qualification for operations under the UK SORA methodology and is essential for future progression into more complex scenarios, including BVLOS. The UK CAA introduced the RPC system in 2025 to align pilot training with the UK SORA risk-based approach.

RPC-L1 replaces GVC as the entry-level qualification for Specific Category operations and is the foundation for advanced certifications.

Practical flight training is delivered from our Centre of Excellence flight site in South Scarle, Nottinghamshire. Details and scheduling are subject to confirmation and weather conditions.

Course Overview

  • Seamless transition to the new competency structure.
  • Future-proof your qualifications for advanced operations.
  • Delivered by the UK’s leading CAA-approved Recognised Assessment Entity (RAE), ensuring compliance and quality.

Course Structure

  • Eligibility: Holders of a valid GVC are exempt from the theory assessment, subject to completion of distance learning materials prior to the start of the course, and can proceed directly to the practical training and assessment.
  • Practical Training: 2 hours of flight instruction, including non-positioning mode (ATTI) flying with a CAA-approved RAE.
  • Flight Assessment: Visual Line of Sight (VLOS) circuits and emergency drills, aligned with AMC/GM standards.
  • Aircraft Types: Rotorcraft or aeroplane option, matching your operational needs (must be in-date and current on either or both options).
  • Duration: Typically completed in one day, subject to scheduling and weather conditions.
  • Flight Instruction and Assessment Requirements: All participants must complete a minimum of two hours of practical flight instruction, which will include pre-flight setup and ground procedures. Candidates who hold a GVC are expected to demonstrate proficiency. If unprepared, additional flight time can be purchased.

Additionally, we can also provide both a Practical Flight and Theoretical Refresher Course. The Practical refresher will involve 4-batteries worth of one-to-one practical flight training delivered over a half day period from our flight site and costs £299 ex VAT. The Theoretical refresher will involve approximately 5-hours of theory and costs £399 ex VAT.

Entry Requirements

The following must be provided no later than five working days from the course start date:

  • Valid UK CAA Flyer ID.

GVC to RPC-L1 Frequently Asked Questions

What is the GVC to RPC‑L1 Bridging Course?Reveal

The General Visual Line of Sight Certificate (GVC) to Remote Pilot Certificate Level One (RPC‑L1) Bridging Course is a CAA-aligned drone training course in the UK designed to help existing GVC holders convert to the new Remote Pilot Certificate Level 1 (RPC-L1).

Why do I need to convert my GVC to an RPC-L1?Reveal

The UK CAA is realigning its training framework to fit the modern Future of Flight and UK SORA guidelines, with the GVC is being phased out. Converting your qualification to an RPC-L1 future-proofs your commercial status, keeps you fully compliant in the Specific Category, and allows your organisation to continuously maintain or renew its Operational Authorisations.

Who is the GVC to RPC‑L1 conversion course for?Reveal

This course is specifically designed for current GVC-qualified drone pilots who want to upgrade to the new RPC framework and remain compliant with evolving CAA regulations.

How long does the RPC‑L1 bridging course take?Reveal

The conversion course is typically a fast-track programme that can be completed in as little as one day, depending on experience and scheduling, with training being delivered at our flight site on the Lincolnshire / Nottinghamshire borders.

Do I need to retake the theory exam for RPC‑L1?Reveal

No. Most GVC holders are exempt from the RPC‑L1 theory exam, although they may still complete theory learning elements to align with the updated framework.

Under current CAA guidelines, holding an in-date GVC means you are legally exempt from the formal theoretical written examination. However, because the framework introduces the new SORA-aligned risk planning and operating protocols, you will still be required to complete essential pre-learning materials provided by us prior to arriving at our flight site for your course.

How much flight training is included in the bridging course?Reveal

The course includes at least 2 hours of practical flight instruction, helping pilots refresh skills and meet the required competency standards.

What qualification will I receive after completing the course?Reveal

After successful assessment, you will be awarded the Remote Pilot Certificate Level 1 (RPC‑L1), the new entry-level certification for Specific Category operations, which will be valid for 5 years from the date of successful completion

Can I still fly commercially after converting to RPC‑L1?Reveal

Yes. The RPC‑L1 qualification enables you to continue commercial drone operations in the UK, meeting the required pilot competency standards for Operational Authorisation.

What are the benefits of upgrading to RPC‑L1?Reveal

Upgrading to the RPC-L1 means that you’ll have

  • Alignment with UK SORA risk-based regulations
  • A clear pathway to advanced certifications (RPC Level 2 & 3)
  • Future-proof compliance as GVC is phased out
