A2CofC theory Renewal

PUBLIC TRAINING COURSE

The A2 Certificate of Competency (A2CofC) is a foundational qualification for drone operators, enabling safe and legal flights in the Open category, including closer proximity to people in congested areas. With a 5-year validity, it’s essential to renew your A2CofC to remain compliant with regulations and continue operating confidently. If you feel a refresher on the theory would be beneficial, EEI offers the option to complete the full A2CofC course as part of your renewal process, ensuring you’re fully prepared.

A2CofC renewal requirements

In accordance with CAA direction, all Remote Pilots (RP) renewing an A2CofC will be required to make a declaration of RP competence and provide the following evidence to EEI as the Recognised Assessment Entity (RAE):

  1. Proof of identity
  2. Current A2CofC certificate
  3. Valid flyer ID
  4. Flight logs that demonstrate all elements of the practical self-learning building blocks conducted within the last 3 months.

Within 6-months of your qualification expiring, you are entitled to book a renewal with EEI. The RP will have one opportunity to attempt a theoretical exam where they must achieve a minimum pass mark of 75%. If the RP fails the assessment, they must complete a full A2CofC theoretical course and a further assessment using a different assessment paper. Please note that assessment results are relayed back to the CAA for tracking. The RP will have the option to conduct the full A2CofC course from the outset if they feel they would benefit from a refresh of the theory.

Should you need to conduct the EEI A2CofC full course, it is conducted over 5-hours of theoretical training and culminates in a multiple-choice exam. The ground school is divided into three key modules:

  • Meteorology: Interpreting weather conditions and their effect on drone flights.
  • Drone Flight Performance: Building foundational knowledge, insights into the capabilities and limitations.
  • Drone Operating Principles: A comprehensive overview of the fundamental principles behind the operation of a drone.
