Renewal Requirements
Once you are within 6-months of your A2CofC/GVC expiry, you can apply to renew your qualification with EEI. You will be required to pass both the theoretical assessment and the practical flight assessment (in either order).
Theoretical Assessment
This is a remote/online assessment. You will be entitled to one attempt at passing the theoretical assessment and must achieve a pass mark of at least 75%. Failure to achieve this on the first attempt will require you to complete a theoretical refresher course with EEI to then attempt a second, different assessment paper. Assessment results are reported to the CAA for compliance tracking. If you feel that you would benefit from a theoretical refresh prior to attempting the assessment, please see the Refresher Course tab for details.
Practical Flight Assessment
This assessment will be conducted exclusively from our Lincoln HQ flying site (if you would rather do the assessment at our Swindon flying site, please enquire here). All Remote Pilots are required to undertake and successfully pass the practical flight assessment as a minimum. In addition, you must meet all criteria below. You will be entitled to a single battery worth of flight to refresh yourself before attempting the assessment:
- You must demonstrate a minimum of 2-hours of currency within the last three months preceding the GVC renewal application. Currency can be demonstrated in both the Open and Specific category; however, it must be verifiable. Failure to accurately demonstrate currency will require you to complete the full EEI GVC course.
- If the GVC is rated for both fixed wing and multi-rotor UAS, currency for each class must be demonstrated.
- You must provide:
a. Proof of identity
b. Current GVC certificate
c. Valid flyer ID
d. Flight logs
- As a CAA-accredited RAE, EEI has the ability to recommend additional training if we find that an individual might be struggling to demonstrate the necessary competency level or hasn’t quite met the expected standards.

If you feel that you would benefit from a theoretical refresh prior to attempting your combined A2CofC/GVC renewal assessment, EEI offer the following refresher courses:
- Theoretical Refresher Course: This will involve approximately 6-hours of classroom-based lesson delivery plus a single assessment attempt, focussing on the theoretical aspects of the GVC. Following this, a further theoretical assessment can be attempted. This course can be delivered in person or remotely via Teams. Cost: £362 exc VAT
- Practical Flight Refresher Course: This will involve 4-batteries worth of one-to-one practical flight training delivered over a half day period from one of our flight sites plus a single assessment attempt. A further flight assessment can then be attempted. Cost: £274 exc VAT
- Combined Refresher Course: This is delivered over a day and a half and combines the Theoretical and Practical refresher courses. This will, therefore, provide you a day of theoretical training culminating in a theoretical assessment, followed by 4 batteries worth of one-to-one practical flight instruction before attempting the practical flight assessment. Cost: £514 exc VAT
